About The Gallery
What?
I created this site as a vent, and excuse, to be a little creative each and every day. I wanted to take photos and upload them to the web from my cell phone. There’s an aesthetic I like about cell phone cameras. The images are light in file size so they lend themselves to the web well.
There’s something interesting about a blog of no words. Web sites are built to take advantage of search engines using keywords and sentence structure so a word-less blog for the anti-brand “8r14n” seems appropriate.
Invitation
You are formally invited to be part of 8r14n.com. I welcome your comments and would enjoy hearing your throughts, or if you told the world about this site.
Each image has a Tweet This button so you can tweet about a particular photo and spread the word on Twitter. You can find me on Twitter as @BrianCharlonis or @DanburyHospital.
Zero Tolerance
The site offers an account-based experience if you would like to leave comments. Recently I’ve been inundated with spammers, especially from .ru domain. To put an end to this BULLSHIT, contact me if you would like an account on 8r14n.com. If you can prove to me you’re a real person and not some ASSHOLE SPAMMER, I’ll create an account and send you the log information. And to all you MOTHER FUCKING BASTARDS trying to appropriate my site, I have two words for you: FUCK YOU!
Manifesto
No image is retouched, color corrected or cropped. Sometimes I just like capturing the moment. Other times I try to get unusual effects using only the phone. I developed the site to scale down the image and watermark the 8r14n logo on the image when I upload it. It all happens on the server. I’m not using any special software to modify an image once it’s captured on the phone. It’s straight from the cell phone and onto the Internet.
All images are raw, naked and honest. Making interesting photos without post-production can be challenging. I dare you to try it.
In natural light the color frequency, or color depth, is less of an issue on cell phone cameras. The chroma of colors can appear easily in natural light. I’ve also been able to create interesting solar bursts and sparkles from sunshine and glares. I’m using a 2 megapixel iPhone now and surprisingly I’m having good results with indoor lighting – but not always.
I tend to take a bunch of shots and upload the best ones. I don’t always get good photos in a session but I upload them anyway.
Low level light tends to make grainy images. Grainy images have their place too but I’ll admit I like to add grain texture to a high resolution images using Photoshop (post production) …But this site isn’t about processing images or using tools to create special effects.
Cell Phone Cameras
In general cell phones are not as high quality as traditional digital cameras because they generally have a smaller amount of image sensor elements. The quantity of sensor elements determines the picture finding and capturing ability of the camera. The resolution of digital images is typically presented in units of measure called megapixels. That’s shorthand for sensor elements. Megapixels are really just a rounded number describing the sensors. Megapixels are the product (as in multiplication) of the pixel height and width of the image, rounded.
What Else?
When I need high resolution images I use a Cannon 14.7 megapixel digital camera. However, that is another project, and another web site, I’ll reveal at another time.
